The Bumblebee: A Story of Resilience and Love

There is an old saying that, according to the laws of physics, the bumblebee shouldn’t be able to fly. Its body is too heavy, its wings too small – yet, unaware of this supposed limitation, the bumblebee takes flight anyway, going about its daily work, collecting nectar, and making honey.

Whether or not this is scientifically accurate doesn’t change the power of its message: sometimes, we must move forward, even when the odds seem stacked against us.

Years ago, when my 22-year marriage ended in divorce, my mother gave me a special gift – an embroidered image of a tiny bee, framed with love. On the back, she had carefully placed the message of the bumblebee’s defiance of impossibility.

At the time, my heart ached under the weight of loss. The life I had known was gone, and the road ahead felt uncertain. Some days, I wasn’t sure how to carry on. There were long nights filled with tears, questions, and soul-searching. Yet each morning, I would wake up, and there it was – that little bee, quietly reminding me of its strength.

Some days, I looked at it with gratitude, drawing inspiration from its unwavering determination. Other days, I glared at it with frustration, wondering when things would finally get easier. But no matter what, the bee remained – a silent yet powerful symbol of perseverance, whispering, Keep going. One step, one day at a time, and sometime one minute at a time.

In January 2025, my beloved Moedertjie (mother) has passed away. Yet, I feel deeply blessed to have this little treasure – stitched with her own hands all those years ago. It is more than a piece of embroidery; it is a symbol of her love, her belief in me, and the wisdom she so gently imparted.

If you’ve ever faced moments when life felt too heavy, I hope this story of the bumblebee speaks to you as it has to me. May you remember to take this just one step at a time. You, too, can keep going. You, too, can defy the impossible.

Much love and always remember to be kind to yourself.
